how to draw a tim burton tree

Awesome decor is one of my keys to planning a killer Halloween party. And the good news is you don't have to go crazy spending tons of money to accomplish that – last year's Halloweenie Roast (and today's DIY!) are a perfect example of that.

One of the first things I do when I decide on a theme for my Halloween party is to start a secret Pinterest board where I can squirrel away all my ideas for decor, food, cocktails and my costume.

Last year after deciding to go with a Tim Burton theme, and one of the first decor items that caught my eye was black and white striped trees. It was just the thing to transform my backyard party space a touch of whimsical.

But how to accomplish it without overspending on temporary decor?

I'm not a fan of buying Halloween decor that's too specific to a theme, so I had to find a way to make it happen for not that much money.

For weeks, I mulled it over. Examples I found on Pinterest combined white trash bags with black duct tape, but I knew colored duct tape would get expensive quickly. I liked the trash bag approach, though, so at first I landed on a simple idea: black and white trash bags from a dollar store that I would cut up and adhere to the tree somehow.

I knew the quality of the bags wouldn't be great and that it would take a LOT of bags to wrap around the thick oak trees. But at the end of the day, it would accomplish the look I was going for.

Then one day I was standing in the middle of a party supply store, pricing items for my budget, it hit me: plastic tablecloths! They're cheap, they're long and they're decent quality – perfect!

In the end, this DIY accomplished exactly what I wanted it to:

I'll never be able to say it enough, but thank you to Sam, Katie and both my parents for suffering through helping me create these trees for Halloweenie Roast 2016! We were nearly eaten alive by mosquitoes in the process. (Thanks, Texas…)

Want to make your own black and white Tim Burton trees? Here's how I did it:

Supplies:

  • Black plastic rectangular tablecloth (108 x 54 inches)
  • White plastic rectangular tablecloth (108 x 54 inches)
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Packing tape

Cost:

Since I had a ruler, scissors and tape on hand, my only cost for this DIY was the tablecloths. They were $1.99 a piece at Party City (Oct. 2016 price).

With tax, this DIY cost me roughly $4.30.

Directions:

Just for reference, here are the tablecloths I used. I bought one white and one black tablecloth.

Open one tablecloth and unfold it. Refold lengthwise (108 inch ends paired up). Fold again lengthwise. Continue until tablecloth folded is approximately six inches wide.

Lay tablecloth on a flat surface with the fold facing you. Measure three inches and cut the full width.

Continue to measure three-inch strips and cut. You should end up with 36 strips doing this.

Repeat with the other color!

To wrap the tree, attach one strip at the bottom using an adhesive that won't damage the tree. I found packing tape worked best for temporary adhesion (and even stood up nicely to the humidity).

Wrap one white strip, then one black strip together to create the stripe pattern. Overlapping just a bit helped create a seamless look.

Continue as tall as you want the tree to be wrapped!
